Materia Support

Materia is a macOS-first, local-first design asset manager that helps you turn scattered images, vectors, colors, text styles, and notes into a searchable, organized, exportable, and reusable asset library.

With Materia, you can create multiple workspaces and kits to organize content by project, brand, or asset pack, then use groups, search, tags, favorites, and the Inspector to quickly find what you need.

Materia is built around the desktop workflow for organizing, browsing, previewing, and exporting assets.

Getting Started

1. Create your workspace and first kit

When you launch Materia for the first time, start by creating a workspace, then add your first kit.

2. Import assets

Once a kit is selected, click Add Assets or Import Files to bring files into Materia. Commonly supported formats include SVG, PDF, PNG, JPG / JPEG, and GIF.

3. Create native assets

In addition to importing files, Materia lets you create Color, Text Style, and Note assets directly inside the app.

4. Organize and browse assets

Materia uses a three-column layout: left for workspaces, kits, and smart collections; center for the asset browser; right for the Inspector.

5. Search and preview

Use the search bar to quickly find assets across your current context. Some assets also support Quick Look.

6. View details and code snippets

For Color and Text Style assets, the Inspector provides copyable code snippets, including Swift, CSS, and Android.

7. Export assets

You can export a single asset or select multiple assets for batch export. Available formats depend on the asset type, with common export options including Original, PNG, SVG, PDF, and TIFF.

8. Back up and import the database

Materia also includes database export and import tools, allowing you to package your current library and related assets into a single archive.

FAQ

  • Supported asset types: images, vectors, colors, text styles, and notes.
  • Cloud sync is optional and uses CloudKit under your Apple Account.
  • Code snippets are available only for Color and Text Style assets.
  • Merge import duplicates conflicting names with suffixes; Replace swaps out the entire current database.

Troubleshooting

  • If you can’t import a file, confirm the format is supported and the file is valid.
  • If a preview is missing, reselect the asset, reopen Materia, and confirm the original file still exists.
  • If you can’t find an imported asset, check workspace, kit, group, and any active filters.
  • Exported databases use a ZIP-based archive format and can be inspected by renaming .materiadb to .zip.
